Power of Feedback

Once all the main petals were applied to the backing, I was stuck. The petals were all uniform with a neutral upholstery fabric on the back for structure and a lighter softer pink fabric on the fronts. The form was the way I wanted it, and I was impressed with the petals not collapsing when the embroidery hoop was held upright (like I was going to hang it on the wall as intended).

Something still seemed to be missing. I wasn’t done yet, having some interesting stone beads to add as well as two large leaves. But something before that needed to be done.

I cannot say enough how helpful it is to have a friend you trust to give you constructive criticism and feedback. Honestly, I didn’t even realize her suggestions could have been considered criticism. They just made sense. Oh, that’s what it’s missing, I can work with that!

Just a gentle nudge in a direction that I hadn’t considered. Now I’ll be working on softer, unstructured inner petals to help break up the uniformity. I’m really liking this added texture and visual interest and am excited to continue.

The Artist’s Way that I’ve mentioned in previous posts dealt a lot with tackling our own inner critics as well as finding those people who are in our corner. Those who support the journey we are on rather than stamping out that creative spark. I’m thankful I have that in friends like Jen and others at You Are Here. I can be self-conscious and sensitive at times, so having friends that can encourage me while also guide me in improving is something I’m really grateful for.

Who is someone that has encouraged you in your creative pursuits?

As always: If anyone following along would like to donate, batting, fabric, textiles, lace, ribbons, beads, and other sewing notions: please contact You Are Here Art Gallery. Oh, Scrap! Is also open to the public to purchase your own materials to create something new!

Thanks for stopping by and happy sewing!
