In this class, you will set the goodies you choose--small beads, glass, charms, and more--in a make-and-take micro-mosaic necklace to give as a special gift or keep for yourself. We will supply what you need to complete a project, but you can visit Oh Scrap or bring your own small components to find just the right thing for your design.

Prop Making for the Stage

Prop Making for the Stage

Nicholas F. Doyle is the co-owner of a Creative Fabrication shop, Vast Made Studios in
Pittsburgh, PA.  With a Fine Art degree from Ohio University, Nicholas found work immediately
as a scenic and props artist for off-broadway productions and multiple theaters and companies
including notable places, Pittsburgh CLO, Carnegie Mellon University, Fulton Theatre, and The
Wick Theatre and Costume Museum. As a scenic artist and props master Nicholas crafts the
visual and physical scenic and prop elements commonly seen in a performance space within
the theater productions, movies/films, and television shows.

Nicholas will be leading a workshop based on the creation process and development of making lightweight, prop books. Books are a commonly used prop within many different types of productions. Throughout many shows and movies, books are commonly carried, dropped, and thrown. As a prop artist one must create a stand-in prop or stunt-double that can be used to eliminate possibilities of damage, safety issues, and overuse.

Learn how props and scenery create the magic of the theater!

Space is limited so pre-registration is required. There is no fee but donations to help cover overhead costs, though not required, will be gratefully accepted. Register in person atYou Are Here, or by hitting the “register” tab at the top of this page.

Puppets and Performance
Oct

to Nov 16

Puppets and Performance

You Are Here announces a new exhibition, Puppets and Performance: a festival of puppetry, that  explores the magic of puppets---their creation, personality and performance. A puppet is a figure – most often a human or animal form—that is brought to life and made to perform by a human puppeteer, not by any machine. But besides being a performer, separate from the movement they are given, a puppet is also an artistic object created by the puppeteer.  Puppeteers are artists that bring together the visual, kinetic and dramatic potential of their creations.

Puppets and Performance, curated by Natalie Condrac, invites visitors to come behind the scenes where the magic begins with puppets, their personality, and their performance space.   Featured artists include D.T. Burns, Tom Sarver, Sasha Schwartz, Sherri Roberts, Joann Kielar, Maddie Macek, Ayne Terceira and Lindsay Goranson.

The opening reception for Puppets and Performance takes place on Saturday, October 5 at 6:00 pm. the reception is free and open to the public.

YAH Workshop: Racism in Art

Join Art Historian MAUREEN KOCAHNEK and Art Therapist and Counselor DANI MOSS at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September, 21 , as we explore racism as a social construct, primarily determined by skin color, that continues to divide. When individuals listen and respond to original art, they recognize that individual voices are amplified. This art viewing and art processing workshop is a way to foster empathy and understanding, and to explore multiple viewpoints, thus bringing participants together.

Participants will view and share responses to contemporary art works made by artists of color. Concurrent with viewing and dialogue, participants will have access to art materials for expressive mark making, note taking, and informal visual response. The goal is that participants will take away strategies for visualizing, understanding, and communicating differing viewpoints and experiences.

This event is free an open to the publc, donations will be gratefully accepted.

Advanced registration is kindly requested. Please go to the registration tab above or you may call or drop by at You Are Here to register in person.

On A Limb: Exhibition and MadLab Workshop Dedicated to Native Birds

Mad Lab is back after a break with exciting new projects to build houses and feeders for the birds of the City of Jeannette. Come and join us on Fridays, and Saturdays between April 26 and June 8. Pick a birdhouse and make it a work of art; then either donate it to be installed at a local park, or, for a small donation of your choosing, take it home and invite local birds to build a nest.

You will work on your bird house while surrounded by the inspiring art work of Eileen Stoner, Alexis Rodefer, and Candace Kubinec focusing on birds and the natural world.

Eileen Stoner is a self-taught graphite artist known for her detailed, naturalistic renderings of wildlife and pets. Her drawings take up to 20 hours to complete, and to bring her subject to life.

Alexis Rodefer uses watercolor to capture the bounty of North America’s eastern ecosystems. “I am especially fascinated with birds and their complex relationships and roles in local ecosystems.”

Candace Kubinec is a photographer and poet whose haunting images bring the natural world close up revealing detail and nuance that we miss in daily life and casual glance.

Complete details can be found on the Mad Lab page. Just hit the tab on the navigation bar above.

Opening reception, April 27: 6 to 8 pm

“The rapid declines in bird (population) signal the intensifying stresses that wildlife and people alike are experiencing around the world because of habitat loss, environmental degradation, and  extreme climate events,” said Amanda Rodewald, director of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Center for Avian Population Studies and a co-chair of the State of the Birds science committee. “Taking action to bring birds back delivers a cascade of benefits that improve climate resilience and quality of life for people.”

We will also be announcing other related events and activities. Watch for details.
