Finish Line & User Error

The rush was on to wrap up the final touches to the birth flower I’ve been working on the past few weeks. Thankfully, as a satellite artist at YAH Gallery, I had a little extra time to finish my piece before it needed to be finished to hang for the show.

I’m really pleased with how it has turned out. From a vague idea of a concept to a tangible completed work. I’ve often struggled with completing projects, so it feels really good to have reached that point.

Though the plot twist of a broken sewing machine needle sure was exciting… Thankfully it was right at the end of the machine portion. I had put floral wire inside the leaves and wanted to sew some details into them such as the veins, plus keep the wires in place to let me mold the positions once completed. Sadly, I sewed over the wire one too many times and the needle finally decided to quit and left haha.

Definitely a learning moment, I’ll have to plan better in the future where and when to insert wire.

My favorite part is definitely these red stone beads. Sometimes you just want that sweet blood clot effect with deep red stones! I still want to look up what they are so I can order more. The stash of them I had gotten from Oh, Scrap! is almost out! Definitely not enough for more than maybe one more flower like this.

I’d like to improve upon how I create and attach the raised (stuffed with filler) center that alludes to a crowning head. I think next time I’ll try a ladder stitch like I used with the mermaid doll. I also realized after I had finished that I may have my measurements off. I originally wanted it around 10 cm to demonstrate that 10 cm is not 10 inches! That birth isn’t as scary as it may seem or what our impressions may be. However, I think I ended up measuring incorrectly and went by half inches, whoops!

Still, with all the petals around, I think the final product is at least comparable to the proportions of the moment of crowning. If not, the connection should still be there.

Overall, it was a really satisfying experiment that I am considering doing more of. Stay tuned!
