Mermaid and Her Treasure Wish Chest

Much like Ariel with her whosits and whatsits galore, I found many items to repurpose from Oh, Scrap! A friend’s daughter turned eight and loves mermaids. I thought what better time to branch out and try making a doll for her!

I fell in love with the idea of using the purple galaxy fabric I mentioned in my last post as the tail for a mermaid. She loves purple. I love the parallel of space and the ocean. So creatively a win-win! There was also this really soft peachy yarn I wanted to use for her hair when I found the textured blue and purple woven yarn as well! It gave me seaweed vibes, without looking (or feeling) slimy green.

Cloth doll making is definitely something new for me, but something I had always wanted to make when I was younger. I’m really glad I gave it a try. I modified the tail part of the pattern to give it a more classic shape, link at the bottom is to the pattern I got from Etsy shop PetrasWonderland. She has a lot of other styles of cloth dolls and stuffed animals if you want to try your own! There are still lots of fun fabrics at Oh, Scrap!

Pretty quickly I realized I wanted to give this galaxy mermaid a nice box to be wrapped in. I try to avoid wrapping with paper when I can when there are other fun, and reusable, ways to wrap a gift. So while looking for the right yarn for her hair, I ended up getting WAY more than I meant to for her gift box. Very easily inspired by all Oh, Scrap! has to offer!

Cleaning up an empty cigar box, cleaning and painting it so it didn’t smell like tobacco, I happily went to work creating a treasure chest. Though I couldn’t help using the “make a wish” gel sticker I found. Allowing it to transform itself into a Treasure Wish Chest. Thankfully I had gotten lots of shells, beads, glass marbles, and other proper treasures for a mermaid because when I got home I realized the mermaid was too large to fit in the box!

So I decorated the box and filled it with treasures for the birthday girl and her new mermaid, as well as a little jewelry pillow I found so her doll had her own pillow. There’s plenty to discover in that treasure box, and hopefully, she finds some inspiration to make something with the beads and shells!

Even with the number of fun things I found, there is still so much to find in the store at You Are Here. Plenty of boxes and jars if you want to make your own treasure keepsakes! I’d love to see what you make with what you find!

For those following along who would like to donate batting, fabric, textiles, lace, ribbons, beads, and other sewing notions: please contact You Are Here Art Gallery. I would love to see all the wonderful things you bring. You can always bring home something from Oh, Scrap! To create as well! Give a little, Take a little and Make art dang it!
