Petals & Mermaids

Here’s a sneak peek at what I’ve been working on for the quilted sculpture. Hint, definitely floral!

Plus discovering the joys of a sewing machine! So many petals sewn in such a short amount of time! This would have typically taken me days to do by hand. The initial apprehension I had with using a machine is much less now that I’ve had a chance to play around with it. I’m also really pleased with how these petals have turned out, I might not need to add wire to the insides with how they’ve taken shape on their own.

As I work on constructing the quilted sculpture, I take a detour to try my hand at cloth dolls. A friend of mine, her daughter is turning 8 and is in love with mermaids. The galaxy fabric I mentioned last week inspired me to make it into the mermaid’s tail for the doll. The ocean gives me universe vibes, and I think the colors will appeal to her daughter. A nice mix of convenient symbolism with a young girl’s favorite color and subject matter. I’m using a PDF pattern off Etsy by PetrasWonderland. Link below to the pattern if you’re interested in making your own! Oh, Scrap! Has a lot of different patterned fabric that would be fun to use as well as seashells and beads and ribbon.

I’m going to try to adapt the tail to more closely resemble that classic mermaid silhouette. As well as find some purple string/yarn for her hair to match the tail and a certain 8 year old’s favorite color. I hear she’s been wanting to dye her hair purple, so her mermaid should definitely have purple hair if you ask me!

For those following along who would like to donate batting, fabric, textiles, lace, ribbons, beads, and other sewing notions: please contact You Are Here Art Gallery. You’re also more than welcome to shop as well. Give a little, take a little. Maybe you can make your own mermaid doll!

Thanks for stopping by and happy sewing!
